Come along and meet other lost souls who dig alternative & underground comix. Bring some comics or art to talk about if you like. Drink too much because you're nervous and don't get out much. Pretend to read the comics you brought with you because you're too shy to talk to anyone. It's all good. I should be able to get there for 8.30. I hope a few people can make it.

I called Talk Talk about 2 weeks, trying to find out why I could only get online half the time. After navigating their sales team I got put through to a technical advisor. I spent over an hour going through various possibilities .... then the phone went dead. I called back, and after resisting a new upgrade to my service (which would cost more), I was put on hold.... for 20 minutes.... until finally being put through to.... a customer service questionnaire! I answered the questions thinking that it might help me get through to an advisor, but instead the line went dead. I called back the next day, and after going through the same tests and procedures as the day before, I was told I needed a line test. This test was to be done over the phone and was booked for the following afternoon. The next day I was asked to test the router in a different socket. Unplugging the router though meant also unplugging phone, so the call connection was broken. They didn't call back. I plugged the router back into the old socket, but now there was no internet connection at all. I called again the next day, and after going through the same tests and procedures as the days before, I was told it was probably the router. I could get a free router if I upgraded my service.... etc..... etc..... etc......
I'm now back online with a new router, but it's the same shitty, half-working connection I started with.

Yep, we're moving the day AND the pub! The next Alternative/Underground Comix meeting is Tues 4th October at THE MILLER near London Bridge.
So that's TUESDAY October 4, 8ish until closing at The Miller Pub, 96 Snowfields, London Bridge.
The Crown was cool when we could sit upstairs, because there was lots of room & and it was easy to circulate and talk to everyone. But now they keep closing that part of the pub at 9pm... and if we're sitting in the regular bar downstairs it just ain't so spacious.
So our monthly get together for Comix Kids picks itself up, blows the dust off, and hops a freight train to London Bridge, from where it's but a short walk to The Miller.
So do come along.... it's a chance to chat with people like yourself who dig alternative & underground comix. Bring some comics or art to talk about if you like, or just sit in the corner hunched over your latest obscure comix finds.
Also, it should go without saying that these meetings are a bullshit free zone, with zero tolerance for any kind of abuse. Cool people only!

Here are some strips from the great Dennis Worden (which I nabbed from www.comicartcollective.com). Along with Kaz, Pete Bagge, Drew Friedman, Charles Burns, J.D.King, Chester Brown, Richard Sala, Glenn Head, etc, Worden was one of the many great cartoonists who got started in the early 80's. This was the first big wave of comix talent to come through since the original underground comix explosion of the late sixties. They were comics' punk generation, and the vitality and creativity of those times shines through the work.

1975 "Famous Cartoonist" Button Set

"Pinback Jack issued this "Famous Cartoonist Series" of self-portrait buttons back in 1975. All of the participating cartoonists were alive and created self-portraits specifically for this button set. With very few exceptions, the images have not appeared elsewhere in print. The buttons were distributed by Krupp Comic Works and Phil Seuling. This set was originally announced as 52 buttons, and the alphabetical numbering reflects that. However, two artists (Neal Adams and Rick Meyerowitz) turned in their self-portraits late, after the first 52 had already been designed. They were included in the set, but numbered 53 and 54 respectively, out of alphabetical sequence."

This is an old strip re-edited for the Forbidden Planet website, who run a weekly strip by me. The strip I send them is usually the continuing Real Men story, or DownTown (which also appears in The Stool Pigeon). Over the last 3 weeks though I've been somewhat preoccupied - namely by the birth of my son Edward, who was two weeks old last Monday!!

I was just having another look at Sarah McIntyre's blog post about the Stripburger "Honey Talks" box of comics inspired by Slovenian Beehive Art :

"Slovenian farmers have a folk art tradition of painting scenes on the removable front panels of their beehives. Most of the painted panels date between the 1820's and 1880's and feature all sorts of weird and wonderful mythological and religious scenes, and the Stripburger collective used these scenes to inspire a beautiful little collection of English-language comics called Honey Talks."

I had an interesting evening last week - I took part in a discussion of the Slovene Comix Scene at Orbital Comics in London. This was part of The Stripburger Talks which Ellen Lindner has organised, and which has involved various talks, workshops and panel discussions. Last Monday's panel was Stripburger In Context, and involved Paul Gravett interviewing Stripburger editor Gasper Rus, and UK Stripburger artists (including me). It was an interesting night (photo by Sarah McIntyre).

I've been fairly busy recently. Two weeks ago saw the release of The Comix Reader issue 2, which is the tabloid comics anthology I edit. I was out just in time for The International Alternative Press Fair - just about. The pages went to the printer (in Yorkshire) on Wednesday afternoon. It was printed Wednesday night, picked up by the delivery company on Thursday, and arrived in London on Friday, in time for the fair on Saturday!
The comic is a 24-page, mostly full-colour, tabloid featuring the coolest, funniest, & weirdest UK cartoonists. More info here : thecomixreader.com
There is a launch party for the comic on Wednesday 22nd June at The Miller Pub near Kings Cross. Also launching are Gareth Brookes' The Black Project issue 1, and Static Revolver issue 2 by Hurk and Kevin Ward. The launch starts at 6.30, continuing until closing time.

The Comix Reader issue 2 made it's debut last weekend at the International Alternative Press Fair!

Oh, maaaaan ... very sad news!! This was probably my favourite comic/book of the last few years, at least since issue 11. I actually wondered if I was losing interest in new comics, but through Mome I was introduced to Dash Shaw, Olivier Schrauwen, Noel Van Sciver, and many more great artists. Plus it was quarterly, inexpensive, and easy to find! Amazing! Eric Reynolds deserves so much praise for getting it to issue 22. I just hope something will come along to fill the void, but who else would have the resources to do it? I guess I'd rather have Mome put together by a series of guest editors, or see it come out less often, than have it disappear, but, ah well.
I'm pretty sure Mome will come to be seen as the most important anthology of it's era.

Ellen Lindner continues to spread the good word on The Comix Reader. She recently placed us in the coolest Berlin comic shops, and now shes takes The Comix Reader Stateside. Last weekend was MoCCA, next up is Stumptown (April 16-17, Portland OR). She'll also be selling original art (see example), her graphic novel, Undertow, and the great Whores Of Mensa anthology. Check them out if you get the chance (she's really a hidden treasure of the comics scene - hopefully not hidden for too much longer)!

Hi Strippers and Comix Fans!

Tomorrow (Wednesday 6th April) is the first Wednesday of the month, which means it's time for our monthly Comix Meeting at The Crown, New Oxford Street!

Is there any point in these meetings?? I think so! This is a unique meet-up for fans of underground, alternative & satirical comix and cartooning! Cool, huh?!
It'll be the usual thing : drinking, talking about our latest dreams & projects, and whatever else we're up to, and relaxing in a comix-friendly crowd. Or as Hurk puts it : Have a drink, read some comix-paper, and discuss underground comics of the past, present & future.
I'll be there from 8ish!
Come and celebrate the "alternative" side of cartooning!

This is the cover to El Vibora issue 1 from 1979. El Vibora (The Viper) was a long-running and influential Spanish underground and alternative comics magazine. This first issue features reprints of US artists such as Kim Deitch, along with French cartoonists like Petillon, and Spaniards such as Max and Martí. The highlight for me though is the first chapter of Las Aventuras De Anarcoma, by Nazario, who also drew the cover.

Crumbproducts.com has three of the autobiographical pieces written by R.Crumb as introductions to The Complete Crumb series. They're worth a read! Someone should collect together all Crumb's written pieces and interviews into one place... that would be a great book as he's always entertaining.
Anyway, they have :

Thanks so much to everyone who came last night! I wasn't sure how many would make it (imagining myself broken and humiliated in an empty room) but it was far busier than I could have imagined. There were guests before I'd even arrived, and by 7.30 we'd filled the room, and were spilling out into the main bar.
I met many cool comics (and non comics) people and had many interesting conservations, & I hope it was the same for everyone else... and if so it was a successful night and worth doing.
I also received plenty of good advice on where to take The Comix Reader next.
The only shame is that I didn't get a chance to speak to everyone, and that I forgot to take any photos!
